Research and development has continued unabated over the past year as prices have slowed the crypto market. Significant updates have taken place, improvements have been made, development goals for the new year have been set. Analytics platform Santiment has rated the top contributing blockchain projects on developer portal Github for 2022. Among the favorites are the usual suspects.
Cardano takes gold
With a final score of nearly 2,500, Cardano has the highest developer activity according to Santiment. The project thus defends its reputation as an academic flagship blockchain. As of 2021, most Github entries have gone to the smart contract platform’s account.
The strong participation of developers is reflected in the many projects of the ambitious roadmap. One of the most important events for Cardano in the development of the network in 2022 was the Vasil hard fork, which gave the blockchain a boost. For 2023 there are other major innovations such as our own stablecoin or the “Midnight” privacy solution.
Second place for Polkadot
Second place goes to Polkadot, whose developer community is usually one of the liveliest. The Web3 project is not known to stop, in 2023 several updates should provide improved interoperability and scalability.
The focus is on the “Asynchronous Backing” upgrade, which aims to increase the throughput of the blockchain to one million transactions per second. In addition to parachains, laudable parathreads will also be introduced in the first half of 2023. Read more about this here.
Cosmos wins bronze
Also still at the cutting edge: the Cosmos (Atom) blockchain network, which specializes in interoperability. The interchain security upgrade planned for January of the eponymous “Internet of Blockchains” is likely to have caused the sudden increase in developer activity from the second half of the year.

With the Interchain security upgrade, other blockchain projects in the Cosmos ecosystem are relieved of the costs of securing their own blockchains. The custom security model aims to simplify the operation of application-specific blockchains. That’s not the only reason Cosmos is one of the insider tips for 2023.
We have nothing without nothing
The degree of activity of a community of developers only says something about the success of a project to a limited extent. In terms of market capitalization, Cosmos is the 24th largest crypto project. Ethereum, which with the merger probably made the most significant update last year, ranks fourth in the Santiment ranking. Bitcoin is not even in the top ten.
However, as a measure of liveliness, i.e. the further development of projects, the evaluation can serve as a rough guideline. The more innovative the projects, the more likely they are to prove themselves in the long term. On the other hand, projects with low developer participation can be discovered as non-starters.
