With 31 million active users, Metamask is the central bridge to the world of cryptocurrencies, especially for Ethereum. Coins can be stored and sent independently in the virtual wallet. Now, ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask, has announced that the platform collects a lot of user data. This causes discontent in the crypto community.
(Editor’s note: The original article stated that MetaMask was collecting the data now changing the privacy policy. In fact, it was done before. Now the practice has just been disclosed.)
User data is collected when using MetaMask via Infura’s client. This is set by default. Infura is also owned by ConsenSys. According to their own statements, all information about identity, home address, email addresses, phone number, usernames, passwords, credit cards, bank account as well as IP address and wallet can be collected.

“It was fun while it was going well MetaMask, but I value my privacy,” Pixelvault host Gooniebrad tweeted. And called: “Change portfolio as soon as possible.” Beastlyorion, a Cardano staker, wrote: “Maybe it’s time to stop using MetaMask.” The CEO of MetaMask also apologized on Twitter: “I think we can solve this problem soon. We do not use IP addresses, even if they are temporarily stored, which is not necessary because we do not use them for nothing.”
Crypto analyst Insightful posted instructions on Twitter on how to configure MetaMask not to collect data. You should use Alchemy for this. In the thread you will find all the necessary steps.
MetaMask’s update comes shortly after Uniswap, the largest decentralized crypto exchange, also announced a new privacy policy. Earlier this year, ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura, raised over 450 million in a Series D round. With a valuation of US$7 billion, it is one of the biggest players in the crypto space. ConsenSys was created by Joseph Lubin, one of the co-inventors of Ethereum.
