Epic has no plans to implement Fortnite for VR. According to CEO Tim Sweeney, the popular online shooter doesn’t work in VR.
Fortnite is considered one of the first major Metaverse platforms. The online shooter has evolved over the years into a digital hangout for social events and a place for virtual concerts. A virtual reality implementation would actually be obvious. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney sees it differently.
Epic CEO: Fortnite gameplay doesn’t work in VR
Just a few months ago, a well-known leaker discovered a few lines of VR code in the latest Fortnite update and suspected possible VR support for Fortnite. However, Epic’s CEO personally denies any plans for a VR implementation of the hit game.
In an interview with The Verge, VR and Metaverse enthusiast Tim Sweeney explains why Fortnite won’t get a VR implementation – it just wouldn’t work. “What we do every day in Fortnite as players is quickly executed in an environment, and that’s the kind of experience that requires intense movement and doesn’t work very well in VR.”
Epic CEO: If VR, then it’s real
Although Sweeney rejected a VR implementation of Fortnite, Epic is not closed to virtual reality. “If we were ever going to do something in virtual reality, it would have to be something that really suited the experience. And it’s not that we’re negative about it. We just have 101 things to do. “said Sweeney
Cooperation with other Metaverse companies is always an option for Epic. “We are a very open company. We work with all companies on Metaverse collaborations and open Metaverse efforts in every way we can be productive with them.
Does motion sickness slow down Fortnite VR?
Sweeney alludes to the possibility of motion sickness in VR games by suggesting Fortnite gameplay wouldn’t work in VR. Some people find the freedom of movement in VR to be uncomfortable. The effect is created by a shift between the movement seen and experienced.
The virtual reality environment simulates movements that the body does not follow. The balance system in the inner ear therefore perceives something different from what is seen. This sensory contradiction is an alarm signal for the brain. It assumes intoxication and attempts to remove potentially harmful substances from the stomach through nausea.
Comfort settings could enable Fortnite VR
An adaptation of Fortnite’s fast-paced gameplay to virtual reality would still be possible. With Population: One, for example, there is already a similarly designed Battle Royal Shooter for Meta Quest 2. Various comfort features in VR games can reduce or completely eliminate the symptoms of motion sickness.
