• Increasingly centralized crypto networks on cloud computing platforms
• Anthony Di Iorio wants to turn individual users into full nodes with “Andiami: The Quest for Freedom”.
• Combination of game and hardware
One of the most important features of blockchains and cryptocurrencies is said to be their decentralization. However, while at the start of the crypto era the arithmetic operations needed to update the blockchain could still be performed on normal home computers, much more computing power is needed today. According to “Fortune”, this has led to the phenomenon of “centralized decentralization” in recent years: important components of various digital currencies, which should in fact be free from central authority, are increasingly operated by a handful of large players. . According to “CoinDesk”, much of the crypto infrastructure is now operated on huge platforms from cloud computing providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or outsourced to infrastructure companies such as ‘Infura. Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio now wants to change that and put the blockchain back in the hands of crypto users using a combination of gaming and hardware.

Andiami: the Kypto network as a game with an adapted game console
“If AWS closes, more than 50% of Ethereum will disappear. That’s crazy! Ethereum was not planned this way. Bitcoin was not planned this way,” Di Iorio criticized “CoinDesk”. “You can’t have a user-controlled internet if the user doesn’t have their own server,” the Ethereum founder continued. Thus, at the beginning of November, he presented the project “Andiami: the quest for freedom”, on which he had been working for more than ten years, according to the press release. Andiami is intended to allow users to operate full nodes on specially developed hardware with almost no technical knowledge. Full nodes are computers that continuously store, validate, and synchronize the complete transaction history of a blockchain network. Without them, the corresponding network would not work, as they are responsible for enforcing the respective consensus rules. The Ethereum co-founder himself created the word ‘Andiami’: “The name Andiami was chosen for many reasons, but above all it represents our desired path to individual empowerment and the realization of an controlled by the user. we all go together,” he said in the press release.
According to the press release, the preliminary schedule for the project extends until 2025. In the coming year, Andiami initially wants to focus on its game components and sell and deliver player kits. According to CoinDesk, a gamer kit costs between $500 and $5,000 and, according to the press release, contains an Andiami puzzle book, a gamer card, a signature card, a USB key and other items relevant to solve puzzles in the game are. To solve these puzzles, players then receive so-called Digital Life Tokens, which “are the heart of Andiami and have a variety of uses within its ecosystem,” according to the press release. Player kits also serve to connect the digital and physical worlds. This is done via Non-Fungible Phygital (NFP) – physical items such as the aforementioned gamer card that have embedded authentication chips to prove authenticity and ownership. “‘Non-Fungible Phygital’ is a term I coined and we will use it [NFP] use in all products we publish. From puzzle books to puzzle cards to player kits […] So when you tap a card, it uses public-private key cryptography to verify authenticity,” Di Iorio told CoinDesk.
From 2024, the hardware component should then come into play: the “Cube”. It is a “custom blockchain computer” in the form of a 7-inch cube that will be sent to randomly selected Andiami players. The Cube should resemble a game console in several respects: It should work according to the “plug-and-play” principle and be specific, i.e. only work for a certain cryptocurrency – just like a game console on which only games run that have been developed for this console. “Cubes act as both a complete node and an individual’s personal digital server. A custom blockchain infrastructure designed for scalability, interoperability, reliability, and ease of use runs the cube hardware and contains indexed blockchain data that individuals connect directly to decentralized networks, eliminating the need for trusted third-party intermediaries Currently, the already developed infrastructure supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polkadot, Cardano, Cosmos, Doge, Binance Chain, Litecoin and others, with more to come in the future,” the press release reads. Anthoni Di Iorio also shared a photo on Twitter that shows the design of a cube:
Wonderful to see and connect with you at Toronto Charles. The distribution of the Cubes is part of a future stage of #Andiami but currently running full nodes, they just need to be released. According to the press release, a node-sharing protocol will then come into effect in 2025, which will connect the cubes to each other via the Internet and allow their owners to distribute blockchain data and transfer new transactions in a decentralized manner. In gratitude for hosting and sharing their node services and blockchain data with others on the network, Cube owners will receive the aforementioned Digital Life Tokens. What you can actually do with these, however, remains completely open at this point.
People should be in control of their digital lives themselves – without third parties
According to CoinDesk, Ethereum co-founder Di Iorio hopes the plug-and-play nature of his blockchain computer coupled with the puzzle game will make it easy and fun for users to run a full node of their favorite network, and therefore blockchain – Further decentralize infrastructure. “The goal is to give people what they need to be in control of their digital lives. It starts with you being your own server. […] Anything that aims to have a trusted third party as an intermediary between you and your money, or you and your identity, or you and your communications, is not the ideal situation,” Di Iorio told the online magazine. Also in the press release, the crypto geek also quoted, “You can’t build a user-centric internet if you have to rely on institutional trust somewhere between a person and a protocol. Andiami is the culmination of a mission I began ten years ago to “give people the tools they need to take control of their digital lives: their money, their communications and their identity.” he will actually succeed, the next few years will show.
