• After a successful NFT collection in 2021, the second phase begins now
• adidas plans to further expand its presence on Metaverse
• The adidas collection can also adapt to other Metaverse environments
adidas sold its first NFT collection for US$22 million
In cooperation with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), NFT collector gmoney and NFT PUNKS Comic project, adidas launched its first NFT collection in 2021. NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, which is a unique token that represents a physical or digital item on the blockchain. According to Cointribune, adidas sold around 30,000 such NFT tokens for around 0.2 ETH each, or around US$765 at the time. A Proof of Presence Protocol (POAP) token has already given select users early access to 20,000 NFTs and made purchases totaling $15.5 million, before finally ending the auction on the 17th December 2021 with proceeds of $22 million, according to Cointribune. With the purchase of such a token in 2022, buyers gained access to special adidas products.
adidas continues to be present in the Metaverse
Now, in 2022, it’s that time again, and the company is embarking on phase two of its Metaverse efforts. “Virtual Gear,” as the company calls NFT products from its first digital apparel collection, is available now at adidas.de/metaverse and OpenSea. Fashion Network reports that each NFT offering is designed to be worn by virtual avatars. He adds that the collection can be combined with other “identity projects and worlds”. Thus the collection will be able to adapt to different universes. Cooperation with BAYC, gmoney and PUNK Comics will also continue. “Web3 offers our designers and staff a new way to envision and redefine how our brand can be represented in augmented and virtual worlds. Creatively, we are very proud that this virtual collection is not only a historic first for adidas,” quotes Fashion Network Nic Galway, senior vice president of creative direction at adidas Originals. Virtual Gear is a collection of 16 pieces, as can be seen on the adidas site. However, the collection is very limited. According to Fashion Network, owners of the NFT capsule collection, launched in May 2022, can now also find out which of the 16 pieces have been assigned to them, but they must first “burn” their so-called NFT capsule.
